MobaXTerm

MobaXterm is on of the command line (“terminal”) tools we recommend for Windows users. This guide walks you through installing MobaXterm and using it to log in to the LCC and MCC systems at UKY. It’s intended for users who are new to MobaXterm or need a quick refresher. Following these steps will help ensure a secure, reliable connection to campus resources.

How to install MobaXterm 

  1. Navigate to the download page for MobaXterm: MobaXterm Download Link

  2. Click “Download now” on the free version

  1. Click on the Installer edition of MobaXterm Home.  The portable version can be downloaded for specific scenarios where installation is not possible, such as working on multiple machines or without administrative privileges to install applications.

  1. After the file has finished downloading, you can find it by searching for MobaXterm_Installer_vYour.Version. Click “Open” to open the file in your File Explorer.

  1. Select and open/double-click the MobaXterm_installer_Your.Version Windows Installer Package. This will open the MobaXterm Setup Wizard.

  1. Click “Next” on the Setup Wizard. 

  2. Read through the License Agreement and check the box next to “I accept the terms in the License Agreement” to accept and then click “Next”. 

  3. Choose a file destination for the installation. Remember the file you choose as any plugins you download will have to be moved to this file location. Click “Next” after choosing. 

  4. Once it has finished installing, click “Finish” and the screen will close. Now you can search for MobaXterm from the Start menu or access it from your desktop screen. 

How to login to LCC/MCC using MobaXterm 

  1. Install MobaXterm (See the above section for instructions) 

  2. Start MobaXterm (Search “MobaXterm” from the start menu) 

  3. When opening for the first time, a message from Windows Security will ask you to allow MobaXterm different permissions to access things on your computer. Click “Allow” to continue. 

  4. Click the “Session” button in the upper-left corner of MobaXTerm. A new window will pop up similar to the below image. Select the “SSH” icon from the top row of icons to get the following:

  1. In the “Remote host” input box either: lcc.uky.edu (for LCC) or mcc.uky.edu (for MCC).

  2. Check the box to “Specify username” and insert your linkblue ID in the input box.

  3.  Click “OK” at the bottom of the window to connect.
