User Accounts and Projects
Accounts and Projects Overview
User accounts
Any faculty, staff, or student may request a user account. A principal investigator (PI) can assign users and resources to projects.
Resource allocations: PIs can request resource allocations. The process may be simple or may require a short proposal, depending on the amount requested (see Requesting allocations) . If approved, the PI becomes the owner of the allocation and may assign it to any of their projects. Some allocations are automatically pre-assigned to projects.
Non-PI user accounts cannot request resource allocations. These accounts must be associated with a project that already has resources. Users associated with a project have access to all resources assigned to that project.
Users will typically be given resource-specific login IDs and passwords or access keys for the resources they can access. For example:
Unix/Linux systems: Login ID is the user's LinkBlue ID; password is the user's LinkBlue password.
Object storage: Access via an S3-compatible client using the provided access key and secret.
Projects
Principal investigators (PIs) may request creation of a project for research or courses. All project requests are reviewed to meet standards similar to those used by the Office of Sponsored Projects Administration (OSPA).
Each project is associated with the PI who requested it. Additional users can also be associated with a project. Some users may be marked as co-PIs to denote their role, but co-PIs have no special privileges over other users. The list of associated users can be modified at any time, except for the PI who created the project. PI changes require approval; please contact CCS for any PI change requests.
Every project has a project name structured as follows:
PI's LinkBlue ID:
PIsLinkblueIDResearch project name:
ResearchProject(e.g., research activity name or course number). The name uses lowercase letters, numbers, and underscores only (no spaces or punctuation). Limit to 20 characters; aim for the first 6 to be unique because some software may ignore characters after the 6th.
For example, a faculty member with the Linkblue ID clp251 may request a Project with the ResearchProject name next_gen_solar resulting in the Project Name
clp251_next_gen_solar
