Accessing OpenStack VM Console Online

This guide is intended for end users that already have an OpenStack account setup for them. It also assumes that a VM has already been created. If you want to know how to create/launch a VM, see the following guide first: /wiki/spaces/INT/pages/7968224. After that, come back to this guide. There are two main ways to access your OpenStack VMs. One is through a terminal (Linux/MAC terminal, Windows PuTTY); Another is through the web front end for OpenStack (aka Horizon). The web console, called the Spice console, is limited (no copy/paste, for example). It is a good option to use if you don't currently have a terminal and want to do a quick check; for example, after you launch your VM, you want to see if the VM shows you the login screen.

Note: There is currently a bug in the Spice console for CentOS VMs. You will see garbage text. Ubuntu doesn't have the same bug. For CentOS, you can type enter until text in the console goes to the bottom of the screen, where it will sometimes show non-garbage text.

  1. Go to kyric.netlab.uky.edu and log in using your LinkBlue credentials (user name will have no @uky.edu).

  2. Click on Project Tab on the left side of the page  > Click on Instances .

  3. You'll see a table of VMs, of which there will be one. Click on the instance name" under Instance Name.

  4. On the VM detail page, click on "Console". Below is a VM named 'ky1' just as an example.

  5. You'll see the Spice Console; if you can't type into the console, click on the Spice blue bar and the black console window.
