Modeling and Validation of Aeroacoustic Noise Generated by a Subsonic Exhaust Jet

Project Description: A validation of Actran’s hybrid approach to the simulation of aeroacoustic noise. Large Eddy Simulations of a subsonic jet from a simple straight pipe and a simple expansion chamber are fed into Actran, where the aeroacoustics sources are determined. From these sources, the radiated sound power and directivity of the subsonic exhaust jet inside are estimated up to 2000 Hz. The results will then be validated using measurement data collected using the muffler insertion loss flow rig and a Hemi-anechoic chamber.

Primary use for computational power:

  1. Running of RANS and LES ScFlow CFD models.
  2. Running large Actran acoustic models.
