Aerothermodynamics Numerical modeling of re-entry vehicules


The Thermal Protection System (TPS) of a re-entry vehicle is one of the key components of its design. The materials used for TPS usually have ablative properties. Such materials use energy for controlled chemical reactions instead of heating, thus keeping the vehicle at a reasonably “cold” temperature. In order to properly model the heat flux at the surface of the vehicle, ablation and material response must be taken into account.

The Design of the Thermal Protection System for the KRUPS Capsule

The research activity is to develop a CFD mesh for a re-entry capsule, KRUPS in this case. Also, we will need to analyze the shock properties on the KATS-FD. These will provide the necessary heat flux inputs to be used in the KATS-MR codes. From the material response, we hope to obtain an accurate necessary thickness for thermal resistance for the heat shield. This will allow us to design our thermal protection system for our Senior Design ME 411 class project.
